General Overview:

Emergency medicine services at North Shore Medical Center include adult and pediatric emergency departments on the NSMC Salem Hospital campus, and an adult emergency department at NSMC Union Hospital in Lynn. Our emergency medicine physicians care for more than 90,000 patients every year. We have a Cardiac Point of Entry Center and a Level III Trauma Center at NSMC Salem Hospital, and Salem and Union hospitals have Gold Plus and Silver Plus ranked Stroke Centers.

We are in the process of expanding Salem Hospital's Emergency Department to reflect the increasing need in our patient population for emergency treatment. The renovated, state-of-the-art, 69-bed Emergency Department will accompany a new treatment model with enhanced capabilities. 10 of those beds will be dedicated to observation.

The ED Physician Assistant works collaboratively with an Emergency Medicine Physician to ensure high quality, safe and timely care for patients with various chief complaints . He/she performs medical screening examinations in order to stabilize and treat those seeking services from the Emergency Room. The ED Physician Assistants may work in all areas of the Emergency Department. The ED Physician Assistants will consult specialists as indicated by the needs of their patients. The privileges and responsibilities of the ED Physician Assistant should be in compliance with applicable State regulations governing Physician Assistants . In addition, the responsibilities detailed below should be undertaken by the Physician's Assistant only if their training and or past experience qualifies them in these areas. The ED Physician Assistants may assume care for patients of all ages within the scope of their professional practice guidelines.

We are seeking a PA to collaborate with one of our physicians for 4, 10-hour night shifts weekly.

Job-Specific Responsibilities


- The ED Physician Assistant works under the Supervision of an Attending Emergency Physician. As permitted by the
Chair of Emergency Medicine the ED Physician Assistants may independently care for patients. This position will
provide care in all areas of the ED within the scope of the Physician Assistant's practice regulations and credentialing
body.
- All Physician Assistants must be able to perform:
- History and physical examinations
- Ordering of laboratory tests and imaging studies as appropriate
- Write prescriptions for physician countersignature
- Other specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, management of the following:
- General Emergency Medicine Evaluation

- Respiratory tract problems

- Cardiac disease

- Abdominal complaints

- UTI
- Psychiatric evaluations
- Alcohol and other toxic ingestions
- Seizure disorder
- Skin disorders
- Back pain
- Emergency Procedures:
- Peripheral IV insertion
- Ultrasound guided IV insertion
- Ultrasound IV central line placement
- Intubation
- Lumbar puncture
- Emergency splinting of fractures
- Arthrocentesis
- Reduction of some dislocations involving:
- Hands
- Shoulder
- Elsewhere if urgent and limb threatening
- Repair of simple lacerations
- Repair of complex lacerations (excluding flexor tendons)
- Cleansing, debridement, revision, repair and closure of simple wounds of:

- Nose

- Auricle

- Eyelids

- ED Physician Assistants will document a complete and accurate chart for each patient seen inclusive of all components

- Gastric lavage
- Nail trephination
- Insertion of urethral catheters
- Emergency management of bite wounds (including human and animal)
- Collection of arterial blood gases
- Incision and drainage of uncomplicated superficial abscesses
- Assess and treat 1st and 2nd degree burns
- Initial stabilization of severe head and spinal injury, including: spine board and rigid collar immobilization
- Reimplantation of teeth
- Removal of foreign bodies of the nose and ear, including impacted cerumen
- Removal of superficial corneal and conjunctival foreign bodies
- Anterior nasal packing
- Slit lamp examination
- Laryngoscopy - direct and indirect

- Emergency attendance at precipitate delivery, including newborn care until the ED physician is present

- Infiltration anesthesia (local)
- Peripheral nerve block (digital)

- ED Physician Assistants will document a complete and accurate chart for each patient seen inclusive of all components
to meet compliance standards. All patient medical records will be completed within ED guidelines as per the Chair of
Emergency Medicine.


Qualifications

Skills

Required: Intense attention, concentration, good visual, verbal and hearing skills and attention to detail. Effectively interacts with a wide range of personality types and ages is necessary. Effectively interacts with diverse cultural backgrounds. Able to document using EDIS systems.
Preferred: Epic capable

Experience
Preferred: Three years of experience to include inpatient/outpatient care.

Education
Required: Master's Degree from an accredited program
Preferred: Emergency Medicine PA Residency Graduate

Licensure, Certification, or Registration
Required: Physician Assistant license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Preferred: ACLS, ATLS
