Executive Director, Radiology

Overview

Under the direction of the Senior Vice President of Operations and in collaboration with the Chair of Radiology, the Executive Director is responsible for the successful operations of the Radiology department within the hospital and all Radiology off site locations. The Ex. Director is responsible for consistent delivery of quality imaging while ensuring patient access and meeting financial budgetary goals. The Ex. Director guides, promotes and monitors the strategic goals for the modality operations managers to ensure that each modality is aligned with their modality chief to establish and adherence to image quality metrics , apprised of new technology and service requirements, ensures patient access and improved patient satisfaction goals. This Ex, Director is responsible to interface with hospital committees and teams to ensure department compliance with human resource and patient safety policies, and all regulatory and accreditation agencies. This director will be required to meet budgetary goals for all cost centers within the department and ensures goals are met with regards to department expenses while promoting growth and responding quickly to manage variances. Establishes a strategy for capital acquisition and works with the modality managers to determine the timely equipment purchase as needed. Establishes and monitors fiscal budgets for all cost centers within the department and maintains budgetary control of department expenses. Works collaboratively with Fiscal Services, Patient Care Services, Decision Support and Performance Improvement teams.

  • Directs, oversees, and coordinates the technical and support services of all sections of the radiology department to promote efficiency of operation and efficient utilization of personnel.
  • Analyzes and evaluates department needs, imaging services function/practices and reporting and record keeping; researches new trends and developments to improve services provided.
  • In conjunction with modality managers, formulates, plans and directs activities pertinent to patient preparation, as well as patient transport, imaging and processing, storage and retrieval of all radiology exams and the reporting of exam results.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with Chair of Radiology. Meets regularly with the Chair to ensure consistent communication relative to the daily radiology operations and strategic planning.
  • Develops, implements and maintains departmental policies in concert with the Chair.
  • Informs managers, clinical leads and employees of any new departmental and hospital policies and works towards ensuring compliance with these policies.
  • Represents the Radiology department in committees and strategic initiatives within the hospital.
  • Represents NSMC Radiology in the MGB enterprise strategic goals and collaborates on the effective implementation of these goals to NSMC.
  • Supervises each radiology section manager and is responsible for their evaluations with input from their respective Modality Chief and the Radiology Chair.
  • Develops and implements, policies, procedures and techniques relative to safety, infection and environmental control standards, and other regulatory requirements to ensure necessary accreditations. Inspects department on an ongoing basis for compliance with established standards to promote efficiency, health, and safety of staff and patients; takes corrective action as necessary.
  • Participates in the departmental and hospitalwide Quality Improvement Committees.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with medical/nursing staff for the effective delivery of Radiology services to patients to ensure effective management of patient care.
  • Demonstrates competency in the field of imaging technology and keeps current in knowledge of the fields of radiology. Acts as the Radiology expert and as an educational resource and is available for consultation to medical, nursing, and other health care personnel.
  • In conjunction with the modality managers, organizes, maintains and monitors department supplies to ensure adequate stock at all times.
  • Evaluates and justifies equipment and supply needs; meets with vendors to discuss purchase of supplies and equipment; negotiates contracts and purchasing agreements and initiates and approves purchase requests for operating supplies and services for all radiology cost centers.
  • Ensures effective management of the Radiology Information Systems, including modifications, enhancements, functional changes, and upgrades.
  • Selects, trains/orients Radiology managers or administrative personnel. Develops standards of performance and ensures a process that promotes that all staff are effectively trained with an established and standard competency process for each modality and there is a routine evaluation performed by the managers that provides appropriate feedback to staff. If necessary, initiates personnel actions, such as promotion or disciplinary action. Resolves employee grievances. Encourages professional development through in-service education or outside conferences.
  • Consults with Chair of Radiology, the modality managers, and clinical leads, the selection and retainment of a determination of need for the replacement or upgrade of capital expenditures, and ensures department operates within allocated funds.
  • In conjunction with the Radiology Financial Analyst, develops and recommends departmental operating budget and monitors operating expenses and revenue within department versus budget.
  • Prepares in conjunction with each modality managers, monthly budget variance reports for each section.
  • Develops, implements and maintains policies, procedures and objectives for department`s activities, needs and problems. Maintains department`s reports and records; collects statistics for administration and regulatory purposes.
  • Assures and measures customer satisfaction measures. Assures that all imaging is performed with sensitivity to patient needs including patient education and that staff consistently provide patient care with empathy and kindness.
  • Establishes and participates in routine meetings with the Radiology management team to ensure collective and consistent communication regarding department strategies and programs and implement across all areas of the department to ensure service delivery is consistent and in line with departmental and hospital goals.
  • Participates in hospital management team meetings, daily huddle and other activities.
  • Ensures modality management production boards are consistently developed and information provided on these boards evolve as needed to manage efficiency and communication.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Required:
  • 5+ years progressive technical/clinical experience in Radiology with Management/ administrative responsibility
  • Bachelor Degree in Science with certification as an Imaging Technologist (any modality).

Preferred:

  • Masters Degree in business or Healthcare Administration.
  • Licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Radiation Control Board.
