Nurse Practitioner - Salem Hospital ICU/Pulmonary

Overview

We are seeking a full-time,40-hour Nurse Practitioner to work Monday through Friday in the Salem Hospital Intensive Care Unit. While the role is predominatly dedicated to the ICU, the NP will also have a responsibility to see patients in our outpatient Pulmonary, Sleep, and Critical Care Office, located on the campus of Salem Hospital.

Summary:

To provide comprehensive health care for critically ill adult medicine patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and adult patients cared for in the ambulatory Pulmonary office practice. The nurse practitioner (NP) assists individuals and families with their health needs by obtaining health and medical histories, performing physical examinations, diagnosing health problems. The NP cares for patients by managing therapeutic regimens, prescribing medications and performing other studies, activities and procedures that are deemed appropriate. New and follow-up patients will be seen and evaluated by the NP and physician input will be obtained as necessary as described in the nurse practitioner practice guidelines. The NP will facilitate the referral and consultative process for patients requiring multidisciplinary evaluations. The NP will work in collaboration with the patients’ attending physician or Intensivist at all times.

Professional Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Lead morning multidisciplinary ICU rounds on assigned patients.
  • See ambulatory Pulmonary patients each afternoon as assigned.
  • Work in the ambulatory Pulmonary office for 4 weeks in place of ICU work.
  • In response to the needs of the hospital and practice, may occasionally provide additional time in the ambulatory Pulmonary office and/or inpatient Pulmonary consult service in lieu of ICU work.
  • Obtain health and medical history, perform physical examinations, review data, and formulate assessment and plan for ICU.
  • Document observations and interventions in the patient’s medical record according to established documentation standards.
  • Order appropriate medications and laboratory, radiological and other diagnostic studies. CT scans, MRIs and any invasive diagnostic test will be ordered after consultation with the supervising or attending physician.
  • Collect, record and interpret patient data.
  • Diagnosis and manage health problems
  • Prescribe medications as specified in “Practice for Prescribing Medication” below.
  • Facilitate consultations and referrals from and to other specialists/therapists as indicated.
  • Facilitate patient transfers after consultation with the attending or supervising physician.
  • Perform bedside procedures in the ICU under the supervision of the attending physician. Procedure work depends upon level of experience and training.
  • Collaborate with Case Management to manage length of stay.
  • Create a post-hospital care plan for patients as applicable.
  • Participate in administrative activities of the Critical Care Medicine Program and participate on Hospital Committees as assigned.
  • Provide accurate and timely reports of charges for services performed as applicable and demonstrate fiscal accountability.
  • Participate in research and/or educational programs as appropriate.
  • Help develop and maintain methods to achieve the Critical Care Medicine Program Goals of providing high quality critical care and identifying opportunities for improvement

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Master’s degree
  • Current Nurse Practitioner and RN licensure as dictated by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing
  • Certification in CPR, ACLS
  • Critical Care Specialty Certification
  • Three years of recent critical care experience

NP experience in a hospital setting preferred
