General Summary:

The Department of Surgery is a global leader in patient care, teaching, and research. Research funding has tripled in the last ten years and we are among the largest surgery departments in the United States in NIH funding. Our twelve surgical divisions are recognized for their pioneering clinical, basic, translational, and health services research.

The Laboratory for Surgical and Metabolic Research is a collaborative research group with funding from the NIH, CIMIT, and industry as well as over 120 recent publications. Current areas of investigation include the role of the intestine in glucose regulation, metabolic and immunologic actions of bariatric surgery, and developing novel therapies for obesity.

Working under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator, and in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, is responsible for performing a variety of general technical research or professional duties to support research activities within a specific area. May also conduct a variety of routine experiments where methodologies are clearly established. May calculate, transcribe and analyze data as well as perform literature searches.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine techniques following established methodologies. Routine experiments may include IHC, flow cytometry, CyTOF, single/multiplex ELISA qPCR, Western blots and other immunological techniques

2. Prepares laboratory reagents and chemicals

3. Performs literature searches

4. Assists with IRB/IACUC medical record review submissions

5. Collects and records data, assists with summarizing and analyzing results using basic statistics

6. Prepares written reports on data as appropriate

7. Assists with daily maintenance of a clean and orderly lab

8. Assists Lab Manager with all compliance related maintenance, administration and implementation

9. Discusses progress of work regularly with supervisor

10. All other duties as assigned


BA or BS degree in a biological/physical science is required. Experience with small models (rats, mice), molecular techniques (PCR, Western blot), immunology techniques and basic microscopy preferred.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:

-Good organizational skills, critical thinking skills, detail orientated

- A comfort with animal handling and research.

-Sound degree of computer literacy

-Ability to record and analyze data accurately

-Ability to prioritize work

-Good interpersonal skills and communication skills

-Ability to demonstrate professionalism

- The willingness to make a 2 year commitment

Working Conditions:

The laboratory environment is a BL2 (Biosafety Level 2) environment. Human tissue and animal tissue (bloodborne pathogens) are present at all times. Universal safety precautions must be adhered to and followed at all times. Laboratory also uses radioisotopes for some experimentation however exposure is of minimal risk. Chemical exposure is present at all times.
